Natural posing: How to get reactions from simple suggestions
One of the harder ideas to get behind for a photographer and a client is the idea of posing. It can feel forced or stiff when done poorly, but when done correctly it creates mood, story, and interest in our subject. To achieve the looks that we want out of our subject we need to learn how to pose simply and effectively.
Simple suggestions. When posing our subject we don't want to overcomplicate or over pose. We want to make simple suggestions to our subject so that they can follow them without feeling like a marionette having their strings pulled. For example, when sitting we can ask them to sit in the position that feels most comfortable for them from there we can ask them to put their elbows on their knees and rest their head in their hands. Or we could ask them to place one hand on their lap and the other can play with their hair. Simple is best.
Lead by example. The easiest way to get someone to pose a certain way is to pose that way yourself. Show them how its done by putting one hand in your pocket and shifting your shoulders to create lines and shapes in your body. Lean your head back and run your fingers through your hair. Tilt your head to the side and look down haughtily. Don't be afraid to really go for it when you pose, if you have reservations then so will they.
Use motion. A great way to loosen someone up and get some great shots is to have them swing their arms or legs and move around a little. Just ask them to look at you and take some shots as they smile and move around. A great idea for couples is to have them walk towards you and try to knock the other away by bumping with their hips. It creates some great smiles and reactions. Simply having someone walk towards you is a great way to get a series of poses and expressions without having to micro manage them.
Have fun. Just remember to encourage your client while they pose. Remarks such as, "That looks awesome. I love it. That’s beautiful" when genuine can really help people relax and show authentic expressions. They will feed off your energy and support and the session will go swimmingly.
